Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Béla Bartók with the album "Bartók: Violin Concerto No. 2 & Concerto for Orchestra." Released on April 15, 2016, under the Onyx Classics label, this collection showcases the genius of one of the most influential Hungarian composers of the 20th century. The album features two of Bartók's most celebrated works, performed by the esteemed Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, conducted by Kent Nagano, with Augustin Dumay taking the violin for the concerto.

The Violin Concerto No. 2, BB 117, is a masterpiece in three movements, each offering a unique blend of complexity and beauty. The first movement, "Allegro non troppo," sets the stage with its intricate melodies and rhythmic drive. The second movement, "Andante tranquillo," provides a serene contrast, while the third movement, "Allegro molto," brings the concerto to a thrilling conclusion.

The Concerto for Orchestra, Sz. 116, is a symphonic tour de force divided into five movements. From the "Introduzione - Andante non troppo" to the exhilarating "Finale - Pesante — Presto," each section reveals Bartók's innovative approach to orchestration and his deep understanding of musical form. The "Elegia - Andante non troppo" and "Intermezzo Interrotto - Allegretto" movements, in particular, highlight his ability to evoke a wide range of emotions through music.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 21 minutes, this album is a comprehensive exploration of Bartók's compositional style, blending neoclassical elements with folk influences. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to Bartók's work, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

About Béla Bartók

Béla Bartók, born in 1881 in Nagyszentmiklós, Hungary, was a towering figure in 20th-century music, renowned as a composer, pianist, and ethnomusicologist. His deep connection to Hungarian and Central European folk music infused his compositions with a unique and captivating flavor, making him one of Hungary's greatest composers alongside Franz Liszt. Bartók's prodigious talent was evident from a young age; by four, he could play forty tunes on the piano, and by five, he began formal piano lessons with his mother. His musical journey took him from his early studies in Pozsony to becoming a distinguished teacher at the Zeneakadémia. Bartók's extensive work in collecting and studying folk music from across Central Europe enriched his compositions, which span orchestral works, string quartets, piano solos, and vocal settings of folk songs. His legacy endures as one of the most significant contributors to classical and neoclassical music, celebrated for his innovative approach and deep cultural roots. Bartók passed away in New York in 1945, leaving behind a rich musical heritage that continues to inspire and enchant audiences worldwide.
