Product description

Step back in time with Arthur Askey's "Band Waggon / Arthur Askey Goes To War," a delightful collection of comedy recordings that capture the spirit and humor of the late 1930s and early 1940s. Released in January 1940, this album is a treasure trove of wit and charm, featuring 21 tracks that showcase Askey's quick wit and comedic genius.

The album opens with the iconic "Band Waggon" series, recorded in 1939, which takes you through a series of hilarious sketches and musical numbers. You'll also find beloved classics like "It's A Hap-Hap-Happy Day" and "The Proposal," both recorded in 1940, which highlight Askey's ability to blend humor with heartwarming melodies.

Arthur Askey, born in Liverpool, England, in 1900, was a natural comedian with a gift for making people laugh. His quick wit and engaging personality shine through in every track on this album. From the playful "The Bee Song" to the patriotic "We're Going To Hang Out The Washing On The Siegfried Line," Askey's humor is as timeless as it is entertaining.

This digitally remastered collection also includes the very last Band Waggon studio show from December 1939, offering a unique glimpse into the past. Whether you're a long-time fan of Arthur Askey or discovering his work for the first time, this album is a must-listen for anyone who appreciates classic comedy and musical entertainment. About Arthur Askey

Arthur Askey, born Arthur Bowden Askey, was a beloved English comedian and actor, renowned for his distinctive persona and playful humor. Standing at just 5' 2", Askey's short stature and iconic horn-rimmed glasses made him instantly recognizable. His career began in the music hall scene in 1924, but it was his role in the 1938 show that truly launched him into the spotlight. Askey's comedy was characterized by his improvisational skills and catchphrases like "Hello, playmates," "I thank you," and "Before your very eyes." His charm and wit made him a household name, particularly through his television show 'Band Wagon' and his film career, which started with 'Calling All Stars.' Askey's courage and thick skin, honed from his vaudeville days, allowed him to tackle a variety of comedic challenges, including a daring stunt involving bees. Throughout his life, Askey remained a favorite entertainer, leaving a lasting legacy in British comedy.
