Product description

Experience the legendary Ben Webster in a live setting with "At The Renaissance," a captivating album that captures the jazz master at the height of his powers. Recorded on October 14, 1960, at the iconic Renaissance club in Hollywood, California, this album is a testament to Webster's enduring legacy as one of the "big three" of swing tenors, alongside Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young.

"At The Renaissance" features Webster's signature tenor saxophone, accompanied by a stellar quintet including Jim Hall on guitar, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Frank Butler on drums. The album showcases Webster's distinctive style, blending breathy and growling tones with inventive phrasing, all in a cool jazz setting.

The album opens with a rendition of "Gone With The Wind," setting the tone for the evening with Webster's soulful and expressive playing. Other highlights include a tender take on "Stardust," a lively performance of "Caravan," and a heartfelt rendition of "Georgia On My Mind." The album also features original compositions like "Renaissance Blues," showcasing Webster's compositional skills.

With a total runtime of 1 hour and 7 minutes, "At The Renaissance" offers a comprehensive look at a live performance by one of jazz's greatest saxophonists. The album was originally released on Contemporary Records in 1960 and has since been reissued, allowing new generations of fans to discover Webster's timeless music. Whether you're a longtime fan of Ben Webster or a newcomer to his music, "At The Renaissance" is an essential addition to any jazz collection.

This 2024 Reissue LP is pressed on 180g vinyl.

I can't even believe how amazing this is. That drum part in Caravan is out of this world. BW truly shines here.

  • Live Jazz Imperfections

    5 out of 5 stars
    jCafFebruary 17, 2025United States🇺🇸

As mentioned in a prior Analogue Productions issue: A note on the outer sleeve says: "This is a live, straight-to-two-track analog capture with no extra takes. Consequently, there are a couple of minor audible hiccups. Most prominently, you'll notice a zip or scratch noise at various points on the "Stardust" piece, particularly at times 1:54, 2:00, 5:38, 6:22, 9:20 and 10:12. This is a recording imperfection and not a fault in your pressing. We trust that this slight noise won't detract from your appreciation of one of the finest live jazz recordings ever made.

I'm totally digging the style of this album. The sound quality is pretty awesome as well.

About Ben Webster

Ben Webster, born Benjamin Francis Webster, was a titan of the tenor saxophone in the world of jazz, renowned for his distinctive, warm, and raspy sound. Hailing from Kansas City, Missouri, Webster's career spanned several decades, from the 1930s through the 1970s, making him one of the most influential figures in early jazz history. Often hailed as one of the "big three" of swing tenors, alongside Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young, Webster's style was uniquely his own, blending a tough, raspy tone with a breathy, instantly recognizable warmth. His collaborations with legends like Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Johnny Hodges are testament to his musical prowess and enduring legacy. Webster's performances in the United States and Europe left an indelible mark on the jazz scene, making him a beloved figure among fans and fellow musicians alike. His nickname, "The Brute" or "Frog," added a touch of mystique to his persona, but it was his music that truly set him apart. Webster's contributions to jazz continue to inspire and captivate, cementing his status as a true master of the genre.
