Astral Signal - Gene Harris

Product description

In 1974, jazz pianist Gene Harris ventured into new sonic territories with the release of "Astral Signal," a groundbreaking album that seamlessly blends jazz, funk, and soul. Recorded at The Village Recorder and mixed at Music Grinder, this 40-minute journey showcases Harris's transition from acoustic jazz piano to the electrifying world of jazz-funk fusion. The album opens with the atmospheric "Prelude," setting the stage for a collection of tracks that are as groovy as they are sophisticated. Standout tracks like "Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong" have become seminal pieces in the rare groove genre, while "Summer (The First Time)" and "Feeling You, Feeling Me Too!" highlight Harris's knack for creating infectious melodies. With its laid-back yet vibrant instrumentation, "Astral Signal" is a testament to Harris's versatility and innovation. The album's influence can be heard in the sound of soul music well into the 21st century, making it a timeless addition to any music enthusiast's collection.

Whether a review is positive, negative, or neutral, we always publish it. However, we screen every review to ensure it is authentic and free of profanity. These checks happen automatically, though a human occasionally steps in. We never pay for reviews.

  • Must-Have Vintage Gem

Absolutely adore this release. The record's sound is crisp and full of dynamics. It's a perfect listen every single time I play it. I got it sealed from Japan. Can you imagine opening a sealed record after 50 years since it came out? I'm loving the vibe here. It's a MUST HAVE :)

I finally managed to grab a copy of this fantastic album. I believe it's the same version as variant 3, though it's missing the #41 on side one and the last two digits and #86 in the runout on side two. Apart from that, it all looks correct. It's still in its original shrink wrap and doesn't have that see-through sticker on the front. The sound quality is fantastic, and I'm thrilled to have snagged a good copy before they become impossible to find.

  • Shocking Funky Synth-Bass Gem

The shift from I Remember Summer into the funky synth-bass of Don't Call Me N* Whitey might shock you when you first listen. This track alone makes the album worth buying. It's simply an amazing record, beginning to end!

About Gene Harris

Gene Harris, born Eugene Haire in 1933, was a beloved American jazz pianist celebrated for his warm, soulful sound that seamlessly blended blues and gospel influences. Beginning his musical journey at the tender age of six, Harris honed a style that was both accessible and sophisticated, making him one of the most approachable jazz pianists of his time. His mastery of the keys was evident in every performance, with solos that swung effortlessly and radiated the blues. Harris was the founder of the influential jazz trio The Three Sounds and led his own bands, leaving an indelible mark on the soul jazz scene. His music, a fusion of jazz funk, soul jazz, and acid jazz, continues to captivate audiences worldwide. Harris passed away in 2000, but his legacy endures through his timeless recordings.
