This isn't nearly as impressive a recording as some of Brubeck's earlier works, such as "The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out." I'm not referring to the musicianship, which is decent, but rather the production quality and other technical elements. The most striking issue is that it's 'dual mono', with the drums, bass, and sax heavily panned left and the piano panned right. Poor Dave, left all by his lonesome! As a result, there's hardly any sense of spatial sound, though the tonal quality is still quite good. That's why I'm only giving it 4 stars.
For those with this copy and not sure what year...I think...think it is roughly 1971. I could be way off. But the labels look virtually identical to other versions from 1971. There seems to be at least 2 pressings distinguished from each other in 1971. A Santa Maria pressing and Carrollton. So I reckon 1971 is the year. Having said that, this is a Carrollton pressing and that plant apparently didn't open till 1981. So maybe this is a 1981 with identical labels to the 1971 version. "Barry" is written in the wax and no mention of that is made in the notes for the 1971 version. Very enjoyable record. Nice sound, great playing.
Apart from Ella, I can't imagine a better artist to interpret Cole Porter's songs than Brubeck. This is a fantastic compilation of some beloved American songbook classics. Dave truly excels on the faster tracks, displaying some impressive skills. Be sure to listen to his solos on "Night and Day" and the double-time part of "Love for Sale". He's absolutely channeling Tatum and Peterson. Desmond adds a great touch to the group and his playing is spot on. The recording quality is excellent. It's a solid pressing. Highly recommended.
