Product description

Experience the magic of a live jazz performance with "An Evening With George Shearing and Mel Tormé," a captivating album that brings together two legendary figures in the world of jazz and vocal music. Recorded live in San Francisco on April 15, 1982, at the Peacock Court of the Hotel Mark Hopkins, this album is a testament to the timeless chemistry between pianist George Shearing and vocalist Mel Tormé.

The album features a delightful blend of cool jazz, jazz, and vocal jazz, showcasing the artists' exceptional talents and their ability to captivate audiences with their unique styles. The tracklist includes a mix of classic standards and lesser-known gems, such as "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm," "Born To Be Blue," and "A Nightingale Sang In Berkely Square," each song performed with a level of finesse and elegance that only these masters can deliver.

George Shearing's piano playing is as smooth and sophisticated as ever, providing the perfect backdrop for Mel Tormé's velvety vocals. The duo is joined by Brian Torff on bass, adding depth and richness to the overall sound. The album's 48-minute duration is filled with moments of pure musical bliss, making it an essential addition to any jazz enthusiast's collection.

"An Evening With George Shearing and Mel Tormé" is not just a live album; it's a snapshot of a moment in time when two of the greatest talents in jazz came together to create something truly special. The album's release on January 1, 1982, by Concord Jazz, marked the beginning of a new chapter in the careers of both Shearing and Tormé, and it continues to be celebrated for its musical excellence and the sheer joy it brings to those who listen.

About George Shearing

George Shearing, the renowned British-American jazz pianist, captivated audiences worldwide with his inventive and melodic style. Born blind in Battersea, London, in 1919, Shearing overcame significant obstacles to become one of the most popular jazz musicians of the 20th century. His career spanned decades, from the 1930s through the 2010s, during which he led a highly acclaimed jazz combo and composed over 300 pieces, including the timeless classic "Lullaby of Birdland." Shearing's talent extended beyond the piano; he was also a gifted arranger and composer, known for his orchestrated jazz and romantic solos. His international reputation was cemented through performances on both the concert stage and in intimate jazz clubs, making him a beloved figure in the jazz community until his passing in 2011.
