Ambient 4: On Land - Brian Eno

Product description

Dive into the atmospheric soundscapes of Brian Eno's "Ambient 4: On Land," a seminal work released in March 1982 under the EMI Marketing label. This eighth solo studio album by the pioneering artist is the concluding chapter in his ambient series, offering a unique blend of genres including ambient, art rock, krautrock, minimalism, drone, glam rock, and space music. Recorded over a span of nearly four years, from September 1978 to January 1982, the album is a testament to Eno's innovative approach to music, combining synthesizer-based notes, nature and animal recordings, and a rich tapestry of other sounds.

"Ambient 4: On Land" is a masterclass in ambient composition, with each of its eight tracks meticulously crafted to create a cohesive and immersive experience. From the haunting melodies of "Lizard Point" to the serene ambiance of "A Clearing," the album is a journey through diverse sonic landscapes. The remastered 2004 version ensures that the intricate details of Eno's sound design are preserved, allowing listeners to fully appreciate the depth and complexity of his work.

The album's liner notes, written by Eno himself, provide insight into his creative process, likening it to composting—converting what might otherwise be discarded into something nourishing. This philosophy is evident in the album's use of unused, collected recordings, transforming them into a cohesive and engaging musical experience.

With a duration of just over 44 minutes, "Ambient 4: On Land" is an excellent companion for meditation or stimulating cerebral activities. Whether you're a longtime fan of Brian Eno or new to his work, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. The album's unique blend of genres and innovative use of sound make it a standout in Eno's discography and a key work in the ambient genre.

This is a 2018 Limited Edition Reissue released as a 2LP set.

  • Short Sides, Great Tunes

    4 out of 5 stars
    Tjep5375UADecember 25, 2025United States🇺🇸

The music is fantastic, but man, these sides are super short at just 10 minutes each. This is the kind of album you'd want to relax to, not one where you're constantly getting up to flip the record every 10 minutes. Still, the tunes are awesome!

  • Eno's Timeless Wilderness Dread

    5 out of 5 stars
    Ileq_EOctober 6, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

Eno truly excels at capturing that vague, unsettling dread that lingers in the wilderness after dark. Considering it's a synth and tape album (with some instrumental backing) made between 1978-1982, it's astonishingly ageless. That's just Eno's knack, I guess! It's got hints of Another Green World - my absolute fave.

  • Amazing Sound, Minor Pop

    levwduwluhkwSeptember 28, 2025United States🇺🇸

Wow, absolutely amazing! My unit sounds incredibly balanced, and the dynamics and stereo separation are just fantastic. Occasionally, it might make a slight popping noise, but when it does, it's really gentle and not at all distracting.

  • Awesome Response, Great Fit

Not totally silent, but level and awesome response. It's a great fit! : )
