Product description

Dive into the rich and diverse world of Albert Roussel with this comprehensive collection, released by Warner Classics in 2010. This album is a treasure trove of Roussel's most celebrated works, spanning symphonies, concertos, and ballet suites, offering a panoramic view of his neoclassical style and chamber music prowess.

The collection kicks off with Roussel's Third and Fourth Symphonies, showcasing his mastery of orchestral composition. The Third Symphony, with its dramatic and introspective movements, contrasts beautifully with the more buoyant and lyrical Fourth Symphony. The Piano Concerto, Op. 36, is a standout piece, featuring virtuosic piano work that highlights Roussel's ability to blend technical brilliance with emotional depth.

A significant portion of the album is dedicated to the ballet suites from "Bacchus et Ariane." These suites are a vivid musical narrative, filled with lively dances, dramatic interludes, and lyrical passages that bring the mythological tale to life. The suites are a testament to Roussel's skill in creating evocative and engaging music that transports the listener into the world of the ballet.

The album also includes the Sinfonietta, Op. 52, a charming and concise work that showcases Roussel's ability to create compelling music on a smaller scale. The fragments from "Le festin de l’araignée," Op. 17, offer a glimpse into Roussel's earlier works, with their whimsical and imaginative depictions of nature.

The performances in this collection are conducted by André Cluytens and Georges Prêtre, two renowned conductors known for their insightful interpretations of classical music. Their leadership brings out the best in the orchestral and solo performances, making this album a must-listen for any fan of classical music.

With a duration of over two and a half hours, this album is a substantial and rewarding exploration of Albert Roussel's musical legacy. Whether you're a longtime admirer of Roussel's work or a newcomer looking to discover his music, this collection offers a rich and fulfilling listening experience.

About Albert Roussel

Albert Roussel, born in Tourcoing, France, in 1869, was a composer whose journey into music was as unconventional as his compositions were captivating. Initially drawn to mathematics and serving as a midshipman in the French navy for seven years, Roussel's life took a dramatic turn when he decided to pursue music as an adult. His early works bear the influence of Impressionism, reflecting the styles of Debussy and Ravel, while his later compositions embraced neoclassicism, showcasing his versatility and evolution as an artist.

Roussel's travels in Southeast Asia during his naval days left a lasting impression on him, inspiring exotic and mythological themes that permeate his music. His compositions, which include ballets, symphonies, chamber music, and songs, are renowned for their lyrical fervor, technical austerity, and harmonic audacity. Unlike the more ethereal sounds of his contemporaries, Roussel's music is often described as rugged and earthy, with a distinctive, spiky dissonance.

Despite starting his musical studies at the age of 38, Roussel's solid craftsmanship and unique personal style quickly established him as one of the most original and prominent French composers of the interwar period. He taught notable students such as Erik Satie and Edgard Varèse, further cementing his influence on the musical landscape of his time. Roussel's legacy endures, making him a pivotal figure in early 20th-century French music.
