Product description

Dive into the captivating world of Albert Roussel with his remarkable album "Concertos pour orchestre." Released in 1999 under the naïve classique label, this collection is a testament to Roussel's mastery of chamber and neoclassical music. Spanning just over 55 minutes, the album features a diverse array of compositions that showcase Roussel's versatility and depth as a composer.

The album opens with the vibrant "Concerto pour piano et orchestre, Op. 36," a three-movement piece that highlights the dynamic interplay between piano and orchestra. Following this, the "Concerto pour petit orchestre, Op. 34" offers a more intimate and delicate exploration of orchestral textures. The "Concerto pour violoncelle et orchestre, Op. 57" adds a rich, resonant layer to the collection, with its expressive cello lines weaving through the orchestral fabric.

Rounding out the album is the "Petite suite pour orchestre, Op. 39," a charming suite that includes the playful "Aubade," the serene "Pastorale," and the lively "Mascarade." Each piece is performed with precision and passion by the Ensemble Orchestral De Paris, under the direction of David Stern, with solo performances by Alexandre Tharaud on piano and Jean-Guihen Queyras on cello.

This album is a must-listen for anyone interested in classical music, offering a rich and varied listening experience that highlights the beauty and complexity of Roussel's compositions.

About Albert Roussel

Albert Roussel, born in Tourcoing, France, in 1869, was a composer whose journey into music was as unconventional as his compositions were captivating. Initially drawn to mathematics and serving as a midshipman in the French navy for seven years, Roussel's life took a dramatic turn when he decided to pursue music as an adult. His early works bear the influence of Impressionism, reflecting the styles of Debussy and Ravel, while his later compositions embraced neoclassicism, showcasing his versatility and evolution as an artist.

Roussel's travels in Southeast Asia during his naval days left a lasting impression on him, inspiring exotic and mythological themes that permeate his music. His compositions, which include ballets, symphonies, chamber music, and songs, are renowned for their lyrical fervor, technical austerity, and harmonic audacity. Unlike the more ethereal sounds of his contemporaries, Roussel's music is often described as rugged and earthy, with a distinctive, spiky dissonance.

Despite starting his musical studies at the age of 38, Roussel's solid craftsmanship and unique personal style quickly established him as one of the most original and prominent French composers of the interwar period. He taught notable students such as Erik Satie and Edgard Varèse, further cementing his influence on the musical landscape of his time. Roussel's legacy endures, making him a pivotal figure in early 20th-century French music.
