This album encapsulates jazz during the transition from bop to modern jazz. Al Haig, a highly melodic pianist, was always a bit restless with bop, despite being skilled enough to accompany legends like Charlie Parker, Fats Navarro, and Stan Getz. This LP stems from an unusual session that yielded a 10-inch record for French Vogue and a 12-inch for American Counterpoint (CPT551). There are no shared tracks between the two. If you're after ballads, opt for the 12-inch, but the Vogue release features an absolutely stunning rendition of Monk's "Midnight". Following the session, Al Haig retired from jazz to take a steady job with the USPS. Since 1954, all the tracks have seen numerous reissues.
