Product description

"Al Cohn and Friends, Vol. 5" is a captivating journey into the world of cool jazz, hard bop, and bebop, masterfully curated by the legendary saxophonist and composer Al Cohn. Released on August 28, 2008, under VintageVibe Records, this album is a testament to Cohn's enduring influence and innovation in the jazz genre.

Spanning 15 tracks and 47 minutes, the album showcases Cohn's exceptional saxophone playing, as well as his prowess as a composer and arranger. Each piece is a blend of intricate melodies, rich harmonies, and dynamic rhythms, demonstrating Cohn's unique ability to push the boundaries of jazz while staying true to its roots.

The album features a stellar lineup of musicians, including notable contributions from trumpeters Bob Carey, Ed Leddy, Marky Markowitz, and Charlie Walp, as well as trombonists Don Spiker, Earl Swope, and Rob Swope. The collaboration of these talented artists results in a rich, layered sound that is both sophisticated and accessible.

From the sultry blues of "Osie's Blues" to the dreamy "Dream a Little Dream of Me," and the playful "Pretty Skinny Bunny," the album offers a diverse range of moods and styles. Standout tracks like "Leonice" and "Topsy" highlight Cohn's knack for creating memorable, engaging compositions that resonate with both jazz purists and casual listeners alike.

Whether you're a longtime fan of Al Cohn or a newcomer to his music, "Al Cohn and Friends, Vol. 5" is a must-listen that encapsulates the essence of jazz in its many forms. It's a celebration of Cohn's legacy and a reminder of why he remains a towering figure in the world of jazz.

About Al Cohn

Al Cohn, born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1925, was a renowned jazz saxophonist, arranger, and composer whose career spanned over four decades. He rose to fame in the 1940s as a member of Woody Herman's Second Herd, where he was part of the celebrated "Four Brothers" saxophone section. Cohn's smooth tenor saxophone style and impeccable arrangements made him a standout figure in the cool jazz and hard bop genres. Throughout his career, he performed with legendary bands led by Henry Jerome, Joe Marsala, Georgie Auld, Alvino Rey, and Buddy Rich, among others. Cohn's compositions were so highly regarded that even Miles Davis recorded an album featuring his works. His legacy endures as a testament to his skill and influence in the jazz world, with his music continuing to captivate audiences.
