Don't sleep on this fantastic Muddy Waters album, it's a hidden gem. Following up "Electric Mud", this record continues that reimagined blues vibe Chess Records was exploring, but it feels more natural and authentic. Sure, it's late in Muddy's career, but this album absolutely slays and it's definitely one of my most played.
This might just be my all-time favorite album cover. The music is fantastic too! I particularly love the groovy drumming by Morris Jennings here. Absolutely amazing.
While browsing my neighborhood Wal-mart, I stumbled upon this gem. It seems they'd stocked up their vinyl aisle with a bunch of jazz and blues records, sans any labels. This one, along with another, wasn't even listed in their system. The manager sold it to me as "store stock" for $23. I had no clue it was a clear vinyl version, as there wasn't any hype sticker like the ones shown in the product images (probably because Wal-mart isn't Newbury Comics). The audio quality is amazing! The vinyl is super quiet, and the soundstage is wide and spacious, with Muddy's guitar and vocals crystal clear. The clear vinyl is a sweet extra too. I'm not sure if this is leftover from the Newbury release (only 500 made, I hear) or a repressing, but the runout's identical. Either way, I'm thrilled with my purchase.
While browsing my neighborhood Wal-mart, I stumbled upon this gem. It seems they'd stocked their vinyl section with a bunch of jazz and blues records, untagged and unlisted in their system. I managed to snag this one, along with another, as "site merchandise" for just $23. I had no clue it was this special clear vinyl version, as there wasn't any hype sticker like in the online pics (probably 'cause Wal-mart ain't no Newbury Comics). But let me tell ya, it sounds incredible! The vinyl is super quiet and the soundstage is wide and warm, with Muddy's guitar and voice crystal clear. And that clear color? Just an extra nice touch. I'm not sure if this is left over from the Newbury release (only 500 made, I hear) or if it's a repress, but the runout's identical. Either way, I'm over the moon about it.
Here's an awesome, yet frequently underrated Muddy Waters album. Following "Electric Mud", this record continues that reimagined blues vibe that Chess Records was exploring, but it feels more natural and authentic. Despite being late in Muddy's career, this album really rocks and is a staple in my heavy rotation playlist.
