This album is amazing because it's like hearing from a fellow L.A. local with a Pan-African perspective. Back in my teenage years, I'd walk past the Marcus Garvey prep school on my way to the bus stop at Crenshaw/Slauson, where I'd catch the bus to Santa Monica daily due to redlining - and this was in the early 2010's! "Afrika" is a powerful Pan-Africanist message to black separatists, encouraging them to keep pushing for their journey to better lands in the Motherland. After all these years admiring Nottz's beats, what he's done on "Afrika" is truly unique - he's incorporated vocal samples alongside the woodwinds and drums he's famous for. The only tape that comes close to this is the Africa tape in Madlib's "Beat Konducta" series, but with added lyrics. Madlib's another West Coast native, and we've got our own unique perspective on being born and raised in a European country out West. Albums like "Afrika" give us a solid viewpoint to understand the Black Sepratist movement.
