Abandoned Cities - Harold Budd

Product description

Harold Budd's "Abandoned Cities," released in 1984 under his own label, Cantil, is a pioneering work in the dark ambient genre, predating the term's widespread use. This atmospheric masterpiece comprises two expansive tracks, "Dark Star" and the titular "Abandoned Cities," both originally created for an art installation. Budd's haunting compositions evoke a sense of desolation and introspection, blending ambient, minimalism, shoegaze, and drone elements into a deeply immersive soundscape.

Recorded and mixed at The Old Rugged Cross and Poiema Studios, the album is characterized by its slow, hypnotic rhythms and brooding, etheric textures. Budd's use of synths and atmospheric soundscapes creates a bleak yet captivating sonic environment, making "Abandoned Cities" a standout entry in his extensive discography. The album's quasi-industrial undertones add a layer of complexity, making it a unique and thought-provoking listen. Whether you're a long-time fan of ambient music or a newcomer to the genre, "Abandoned Cities" offers a rich and rewarding auditory experience.

This is a 2013 Reissue released as a LP.

A quite gloomy, occasionally foreboding listen. It's worth a spin, depending on what you're in the mood for.

  • Box Unbearably Loud

    AjoqrjuZleigOctober 30, 2024United States🇺🇸

Man, my fresh-out-the-box copy is insanely loud, straight from the packaging...It's easily one of the noisiest I've come across lately. For this genre, you need a super quiet background, and this is a complete letdown. You might as well grab the CD version instead!

Man, my fresh-out-of-the-box copy is super loud, straight from the packaging...It's one of the noisiest I've come across lately. For this genre, you need a silent background, and this one's a total letdown. May as well grab the CD instead!
