Product description

Immerse yourself in the rich, vibrant history of one of the world's most fascinating cities with Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol's "A Story of the City: Constantinople, Istanbul." This ambitious double album, released in 2011 under the DUNYA, inc. label, is a testament to Sanlıkol's deep understanding and appreciation of both Western classical and Turkish musical traditions. As a multi-instrumentalist and ethnomusicologist, Sanlıkol masterfully weaves together the sounds and stories of Constantinople and Istanbul, creating a captivating musical journey through time.

The album spans an impressive 40 tracks, with a total runtime of 1 hour and 40 minutes. It features a diverse range of compositions, from Byzantine chants to Ottoman classical music, and even some original works by Sanlıkol himself. The tracks are performed by Sanlıkol and his ensemble, DÜNYA, along with collaborations from Schola Cantorum and Ensemble Trinitas, showcasing a blend of traditional and contemporary instruments and vocal styles.

Throughout the album, you'll encounter a variety of musical forms and moods, from the solemn and contemplative "Lamentatio Sanctae Matris Ecclesiae Constantinopolitanae" to the lively and rhythmic "Buselik Aşiran Peşrev." The album also includes several instrumental pieces, such as the hauntingly beautiful "Ney Taksim" and the intricate "Suznak Saz Semaisi," which highlight Sanlıkol's exceptional skill as a composer and performer.

Whether you're a fan of world music, classical music, or simply appreciate the art of storytelling, this album is sure to captivate and inspire you. So, sit back, press play, and let the enchanting sounds of Constantinople and Istanbul transport you to another time and place.
