Product description

Bud Powell's 'A Portrait of Thelonious' is a masterful tribute to the legendary Thelonious Monk, released on 1 January 1965 under the esteemed Columbia/Legacy label. This 47-minute jazz extravaganza showcases Powell's incredible prowess as he delves into the realm of bebop, hard bop, and cool jazz.

The album's tracklist is a testament to Powell's admiration for Monk, featuring iconic pieces such as 'Thelonious', 'Monk's Mood', and 'Ruby, My Dear'. Highly recommended recording from Bud's time in France. The final track, Squatty, a wonderful lively, swinging tune is one of the highlights for sure. This Japanese (silent vinyl) pressing is a really pleasurable listen.

I bought a mint copy as a cheap throw in to an order for a handful of Japanese records. The sound quality is phenomenal (almost on the level of Three Blind Mice); the sound is a full throttle yet controlled attack and the vinyl is dead quiet. The record would be worth the price at $80 but at the current bargain bin prices it is going for; this might be one of the best steals in jazz vinyl.

This pressing is diamond for the ear! Crisp and true analogue sound. Exceptional stage and mastering. This is actually an ode to Cannonball Adderley, who produced this session dedicated to the music of Thelonious Monk. Very powerful work, wonderfully captured full of emotions and amazing palpable three-dimensional sound

About Bud Powell

Bud Powell, a titan of jazz piano, was a central figure in the birth and evolution of bebop. With a style marked by breathtaking speed, harmonic sophistication, and melodic invention, Powell's playing rivaled the virtuosity of contemporaries like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. His complex phrasing and nimble right-hand melodies set new standards for jazz pianists, influencing generations that followed. Powell's most celebrated recordings, made for Blue Note, showcase his genius and remain essential listening for any jazz enthusiast. Despite personal struggles, Powell's legacy as one of the greatest bebop pianists is undisputed, with legends like Herbie Hancock hailing him as the foundation of modern jazz piano.
