Product description

Released in 1995, "A Northern Soul" is the second studio album by English rock band The Verve, marking a significant milestone in their career. This album, originally released on June 20, 1995, and later reissued on July 3, 1995, through Hut Records, captures the essence of the Britpop and shoegaze genres, blending them with elements of alternative rock, blues rock, and indie rock. With a duration of just over an hour, the album features 12 meticulously crafted tracks that showcase The Verve's unique sound and lyrical depth.

The album opens with "A New Decade - Remastered 2016," setting the tone for a journey through the band's introspective and melodic style. Standout tracks like "This Is Music - Remastered 2016" and "Son Of A Storm" highlight the band's ability to create atmospheric, layered soundscapes that are both polished and raw. "A Northern Soul" is a testament to The Verve's growth as musicians, offering a more focused and refined sound compared to their earlier works. The album's title track, "A Northern Soul - Remastered 2016," epitomizes the Manchester sound, infusing the music with a gritty, northern charm that resonates with listeners.

The Verve's signature blend of shoegaze and Britpop is evident throughout the album, with tracks like "Drive You Home - Remastered 2016" and "History - Remastered 2016" showcasing their knack for creating hauntingly beautiful melodies and thought-provoking lyrics. The album's remastered version, released in 2016, ensures that the music sounds as fresh and impactful as it did upon its initial release. "A Northern Soul" is a quintessential album from the mid-90s, capturing the spirit of the era while standing the test of time as a timeless piece of rock music.

This 2025 Limited Edition Reissue Remastered 2LP set is pressed on 140g Red vinyl.

It's mad that this still costs a fortune when it's got the same mastering as the CD

This record feels like it has a soul of its own. A friend's older sibling grabbed it when it first came out during a trip to London. They let me borrow it when they were back in the US. It resonated with me right away, but I didn't truly grasp or appreciate it until a few years down the line. This album has been a staple in my collection for ages. It's just a standard-bearer for psychedelic rock and a personal trip down memory lane... Absolutely one of my all-time faves. Kudos!

  • Remastering Falls Short

    3 out of 5 stars
    tayzugeqSeptember 13, 2025United States🇺🇸

This release is decent, but it's got that same loud remastering you'll find on the new remastered CD. Although these LPs probably came from a 24-bit master (maybe even 96kHz), since the mastering's the same, your ears won't notice much difference. I've owned an original pressing for ages and I reckon it sounds better than the new CD and LP. That said, I think the original CD sounds pretty much the same as the original LP, likely cut from the same master too. I wouldn't suggest spending big bucks on the original LP, I'd just stick with the original CD. If you're set on having this on vinyl because you care more about the format than the sound, at least Optimal did a fantastic job on the pressing (as they usually do) and you won't have to drop over US$200 to get a mint copy.

About The Verve

The Verve, hailing from Wigan, England, emerged in the early 1990s as a formidable force in the rock scene. Fronted by the charismatic Richard Ashcroft, the band initially consisted of Nick McCabe on guitar, Simon Jones on bass, and Peter Salisbury on drums. Later, Simon Tong joined on guitar and keyboards during their first reunion. Known for their evolution from atmospheric neo-psych sounds to anthemic alternative rock, The Verve captivated audiences with their emotive lyrics and powerful melodies. Their breakthrough came with the massive success of their 1997 album, which featured the iconic track "Bittersweet Symphony." This album solidified their status as visionaries in the Britpop and shoegaze genres, making them a must-listen for any rock enthusiast.
