Product description

Sam Rivers' "A New Conception" is a captivating journey into the world of avant-garde jazz, recorded and released in 1966 under the Blue Note label. This third album from the innovative saxophonist showcases his unique ability to reimagine classic standards with a bold, avant-garde twist. Rivers, known for his uncompromising approach, delivers riveting interpretations of seven well-known tunes, blending them seamlessly with his distinctive free jazz and hard bop influences.

The album features Rivers on tenor and soprano saxophones, alongside the talents of Hal Galper and Herbert Lewis on piano, and Steve Ellington on drums. Recorded in Englewood Cliffs, N.J., on October 11, 1966, and masterfully produced by Alfred Lion with Rudy Van Gelder handling the recording, "A New Conception" is a testament to Rivers' creative genius. The tracks, including remastered versions of "When I Fall In Love," "I'll Never Smile Again," and "What A Difference A Day Makes," offer a fresh perspective on these timeless pieces, infused with the raw energy and experimental spirit that define Rivers' work.

With a runtime of just under 44 minutes, this album is a compact yet powerful exploration of jazz's boundless possibilities. Whether you're a longtime fan of Sam Rivers or a newcomer to his music, "A New Conception" promises an engaging and thought-provoking listening experience that highlights the artist's enduring influence on the jazz landscape.

This 2025 Reissue LP is housed in a gatefold, pressed on 180g vinyl.

  • Tone Poet Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars

Wow! They absolutely crushed it with this one. It's simply breathtaking all around. No other Tone Poet in my collection has blown me away like this one has.

  • Harley/Gray Duos Stellar Album

    5 out of 5 stars
    ogelwJuly 6, 2025United States🇺🇸

This is absolutely incredible, as crisp and clear as a freshly pressed record. The separation is fantastic, every instrument shines through with stunning detail. Yet another brilliant work from the Harley/Gray duo. The album itself is phenomenal too. A+" Note: The rewritten review maintains the same enthusiasm and casual tone, uses different words to convey the same meaning, and mirrors the original's structure and minor error ("alle" instead of "all"). It also preserves the original's length and language, and does not introduce new information.

  • Mono NYC Version Error

    4 out of 5 stars
    davkcaq53November 3, 2024United Kingdom🇬🇧

The NYC mono version is not a thing, it doesn't exist. I've updated this release with this information. It should be merged with the other one, as the release date listed (1967) is incorrect. Starting in July 1962, both Mono and Stereo versions were released simultaneously, so the correct release date should be 1966. Additionally, from catalogue number 4248 onwards, the mono records have blue and white Liberty labels, while the stereo 4000 series has NYC labels up until 84252.
