Product description

Experience the enchanting blend of classical elegance and festive cheer with Kathleen Battle's "A Carnegie Hall Christmas." Released in 1992 under the Sony Classical label, this exquisite collection features a harmonious fusion of opera, choral, and classical genres, all wrapped up in a festive holiday package. With a runtime of approximately 75 minutes, this album is a delightful journey through beloved Christmas carols and timeless classics, beautifully interpreted by the renowned soprano Kathleen Battle.

Joining Battle are the equally talented Frederica von Stade and jazz legend Wynton Marsalis, accompanied by the Orchestra of St. Luke's and the Christmas Concert Choir. Under the skilled direction of conductor André Previn, this ensemble brings a rich and diverse musical experience to the fore. The album opens with the familiar "The Twelve Days of Christmas" and seamlessly transitions through a variety of styles, from the operatic "Exsultate, jubilate" to the joyful "Joy to the World!" and the serene "Silent Night."

Highlights include the soulful rendition of "Mary's Little Boy Child," the medley of "The Christmas Song" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and the enchanting "Abendsegen" from "Hänsel und Gretel." Each track is performed with a level of artistry and precision that showcases the incredible talents of the performers and the depth of their musical collaboration.

"A Carnegie Hall Christmas" is not just a collection of holiday songs; it's a celebration of the season through the lens of classical and operatic excellence. Whether you're a fan of Kathleen Battle's powerful vocals, the rich harmonies of the choral arrangements, or the festive spirit of the holiday season, this album offers something for everyone. It's a timeless addition to any music collection, perfect for setting the mood during the holiday season or anytime you crave a touch of festive magic.

About Kathleen Battle

Kathleen Battle, the acclaimed American operatic soprano, is celebrated for her distinctive vocal range and tone, which have captivated audiences worldwide. Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, Battle first gained recognition through her concert performances with major orchestras in the 1970s before making her opera debut in 1975. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, she expanded her repertoire to include both lyric and coloratura soprano roles, solidifying her status as one of the finest sopranos of her time. Battle made history as the first African American female opera singer to win both a Grammy and an Emmy, and she has since garnered five Grammy Awards for her extraordinary contributions to the operatic and classical music scenes. After a notable hiatus from the Metropolitan Opera, Battle returned in 2016 and 2024 for memorable performances, showcasing her enduring artistry and vocal beauty. Her mesmerizing performances continue to inspire and enchant audiences, making her a legendary figure in the world of opera and classical music.
