Fantastic record, sounds incredible. Grab it if you get the chance!
The audio quality here is just as impressive as Mac's lo-fi tunes. Every instrument has such a crisp and clear sound.
In my opinion, this is the ultimate version. I absolutely adore the official release of this album; it holds a dear spot in my heart that will always remind me of a significant time in my life. That being said, the demos aren't quite my cup of tea. They're so vastly different from the official release that it's a bit jarring for me. However, I must admit, I'm really glad to have them included in this 2LP set featuring both the final tracks and the demos. I gave the entire album a listen and I appreciate having them together in one package. I think it's fascinating that Mac DeMarco releases full-length demo albums for so many of his records; I genuinely believe that compiling them like this was a brilliant move and probably the best way to experience this album. Apart from my preference for the official release, the sound quality is incredibly good, the Viceroy colorway is stunning, the little booklet sewn into the spine is a nice touch (though I would have preferred something more like what VMP has been doing lately), and small details like printing β10 Yearsβ on the spine make this a truly great release. I hope they treat Salad Days with a similar release in a few years.
In terms of technical aspects, I genuinely believe that this debut album by Macs is his finest work. The pressing and mastering strike an excellent balance, offering the best from his subsequent albums with minimal surface noise and incredibly lively instruments. Subjectively speaking, the lyrics and compositions might be simpler compared to his later releases, but there are still some killer tracks that make it just as enjoyable as the rest. Edit: I own the repress/reissue which doesn't appear to be pressed by United. I might even suggest going for the Repress due to this reason, as my copy is clean and quiet, unlike what others have mentioned here. Excellent vinyl pressing, couldn't ask for better. Definitely suggest picking this one up.
