Product description

"1st Bassman" is a captivating jazz album by the legendary bassist Paul Chambers, released under the Vee-Jay Records label in December 2007. Originally recorded in Chicago in 1961, this album is a testament to Chambers' mastery of the acoustic bass, showcasing his virtuosic skills and innovative approach to the instrument. The album is a blend of hard bop, bebop, and cool jazz, featuring compositions by the renowned Yusef Lateef.

The album spans a concise yet impactful 31 minutes, with five tracks that highlight Chambers' exceptional talent and his ability to lead with the bass. He is accompanied by notable musicians such as trumpeter Tommy Turrentine and trombonist Curtis, creating a rich and dynamic sound throughout the album. The tracks, including "Melody," "Bass Region," and "Mopp Shoe Blues," offer a mix of intricate melodies, rhythmic complexity, and soulful expressions.

"1st Bassman" is the second of two LPs Paul Chambers recorded for the African-American-run Vee-Jay label, a Gary, Indiana-based operation known for its significant contributions to the jazz genre. This album is a must-listen for jazz enthusiasts and anyone appreciating the artistry of the acoustic bass. Chambers' playing on "1st Bassman" is not just technically impressive but also deeply expressive, making it a standout piece in his discography and a valuable addition to any jazz collection.

About Paul Chambers

Paul Chambers, born in Pittsburgh in 1935, was a titan of the jazz double bass, leaving an indelible mark on the hard bop era. His career, though tragically cut short by tuberculosis at the age of 33, was a whirlwind of creativity and innovation. Chambers was a key member of Miles Davis' legendary first great quintet, providing the rhythmic foundation that allowed the group to soar. His distinctive bowed solos set him apart, making him one of the most influential and widely-known bassists of his time.

Chambers' discography is a testament to his prolific career, with over 100 albums as a sideman and a dozen as a leader or co-leader. His work with pianist Wynton Kelly further cemented his status as a jazz heavyweight. Chambers' beautiful tone, fluid technique, and impeccable time made him a standout among his peers. His contributions to jazz are not just heard in his recordings but also felt in the enduring influence he had on generations of musicians.
